Georgetown, SC December 9-12, 2021

Georgetown, SC is another boat-centric little harbor town.  In some ways it reminds one of Beaufort, NC but not in others.  There is more of an actual town other than the waterfront and some industrial factory type buildings surround the harbor.  It has a quaint little waterside strip with a boardwalk and we enjoyed our time there, but given a choice, I'd say I'd rather spend more time in Beaufort.  Its also quite a distance from the ocean to the town, such that it adds a lot of time to get up into the docks.

We did meet some very nice folks.  There was a guy who had a little gourmet store and a separate cupcake shop that we met who was trying to figure out how to be more helpful to yachties.  He offered to drive us around to the grocery or any other provisions we needed and gave us the lowdown on where to eat and where to avoid.  Dining was a bit uneven.  We tried a sushi place that had amazing Yelp and Google reviews, but I guess it turns out that the locals have no idea what good sushi is actually like.  The gem in our opinion was an unassuming placed called the SoCo Grill which was much better than you'd guess looking at it.  The Mexican joint was decent, but didn't serve beer or margaritas, which is worth a demerit.  There was a place called Root which had great food, but was quite slow.  Maybe we just caught them on a bad day, I'd try them again if I had a chance.

It was a pretty decent hike to the grocery and I had to cross some sketchy terrain to get there.  I was confronted by a very angry dude who was looking for his girlfriend.  Apparently, his car had broke down and while he was trying to arrange for someone to fix it, she took off in search of greener pastures.  I'm not sure I would have told him where she went if I knew, but I didn't have to answer that question because I hadn't seen hide nor hair of her.

We did randomly wander into an outdoor Christmas market where various locals were selling their crafts and food.  I bought some homemade hot sauce from a very excited gentleman who thinks I should order it as I boat around the world.  It was good, but not quite THAT good.

We weren't initially sure how long we would need to stay in town, and the marina guy just charged me for the shortest stay telling me it would be no problem to add days.  When it came time to add one extra day, they said that they had already arranged for someone to take my spot and I had to leave.  In truth they probably did me a favor because I could simply move out of the town and anchor in a spot very close to the ocean and save some time on my next leg.
